Dogs Live in the Moment and Why We Should Too

20 Dec

Want to teach your dog how to walk calmly on a leash, without pulling or stopping to sniff every bush?

Then be in the moment.

When I’m with one of my dogs (clients), I am totally engaged in what I am doing. I’m not rushing because I’m late to work (I’m already there!). I’m not counting the seconds for the walk to end so I can get on with my day. No anxiety or stress.

My dogs and I settle in to a good pace, and that calm, relaxed vibe syncs us up. We’re both in the zone. Since I’m relaxed, my dogs tend to be as well. And relaxed dogs walk better than anxious ones.

If you’re on a tight schedule, instead of constantly checking your watch, try setting a stopwatch (on your iPhone, etc). Then, refocus completely on your walk together. Forget about the day, work, clients, money, bills. Just enjoy yourself. Enjoy your dog. When the alarm goes off, you can end the walk and get on with the rest of your day.

Life is hectic, and some days walking your dog can seem more like a ‘to do’ or chore than quality time with someone you love. But the more you are able to focus on those moments together, the more both of you will enjoy the experience.
