Walking Equals Bonding

8 Dec

Chloe was scared. And like many smaller, timid dogs, she dealt with that fear by growling and showing teeth. Classic fear-aggression. The problem was, Chloe needed to go out to pee, and it was my job to make sure that happened.

But how? Attaching a leash to her collar would only stress her out more.

Luckily, Chloe’s owners had a thin nylon lead hanging by the door. By making a really large loop on one end, I was able to carefully slip it over Chloe’s head without putting my fingers in harm’s way. Chloe crouched down as I gently put the lead on, watching my every move like a hawk. Then something amazing happened.

We started walking.

Around the house at first, then in the courtyard. This little dog, who just minutes before was looking at me like I was a giant biscuit, was now happily following me around. It’s as if she was thinking “Oh, OK. There’s nothing to be afraid of. He’s just here to lead me around and explore. Cool!”

Since that first moment on the leash, Chloe has never once been the least bit aggressive with me. She’s still a timid little girl, and that will probably never go away. But our walks together have formed a strong bond built on trust and having fun together.

Walking equals bonding. It’s not just about exercise and potty time. It’s about connection.
